Breast Cancer Awareness and Post-Breast Surgery Therapy
October 12, 2015
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and here at Sovereign Rehabilitation, we’re proud to support survivors with our integrative post-breast surgery services.
Our caring, attentive therapists understand the unique struggles of women who’ve undergone mastectomies, lumpectomies and breast reconstruction, and we’re here to offer support throughout the post-surgery process to help women not only feel better, but also get back to living their best lives.
Thanks to scarring and disturbances in the soft tissue under the arm, shoulder and chest, breast surgeries can immobilize women, making it difficult to complete simple daily tasks such as hair washing, getting dressed, even simply lifting the arms.
Our specialized therapists can design a program utilizing manual physical therapy techniques, scar massage and desensitization techniques, light upper-body exercises to help restore posture, strength, and arm movement, and exercise that can reduce pain and tightness in affected areas.
If you’re a woman recovering from breast surgery, these tips may also help:
- Stay as physically active as possible. Light movements and exercises like walking help improve your state of mind and reduce the potential for conditions like deep-vein thrombosis. Research has also indicated that exercise may improve survival rates for breast cancer survivors.
- Manage your pain. Pain will be a part of your recovery process, but talking to your doctor about the right way to manage it can go a long way to easing your mind and body.
- Nourish your body with nutrient-dense foods. You’re body has been through a lot. Tend to it with a diet full of vitamins and minerals to promote overall health and wellness. Eating well can also keep your weight under control, which may reduce your chance for breast cancer recurrence.
The women’s health specialists at Sovereign Rehabilitation stand by breast cancer survivors with a wide range of services to help encourage recovery after breast surgery. Give us a call today to learn more about how our individualized treatment programs may be right for you.
