Preventing Osteoporosis-Related Injuries

Osteoporosis is a condition that compromises the integrity and strength of our bones, making them more susceptible to fractures and breaks. It primarily affects women over the age of 50, but men can also be affected.
Falls are a common concern for those living with osteoporosis, but these tips can help prevent injury and keep you safe.
- Low-impact exercises such as swimming, walking, and yoga can all help protect weak bones by strengthening protective muscle and cartilage. Exercise can also help improve balance and coordination, making falls less likely.
- Beef up your diet with bone-friendly foods and vitamins. Foods high in calcium and vitamin D, such as yogurt and milk, are great for bone health. Salmon is also a great source of bone-building vitamin D, and foods like spinach are packed with fiber, iron, and vitamin A. Say no to inflammation-inducing foods high in sugar, trans fat, and other processed ingredients.
- Steer clear of smoking and avoid excessive use of alcohol and caffeine. All of these negatively affect bone density.
Staying Safe at Home
- Keep hallways, entry ways, walkways, and doorways at home clear of things that could make it easier to slip and fall — think cords, wires, throw rugs (even spills and small messes can be hazards).
- Make sure all stairways, walkways, and driveways are well lit, and use night lights in bathrooms, bedrooms, and hallways.
- Keep salt or kitty litter handy for icy patches in winter.
- Stick to overhead lights in each room to avoid having to fumble for lamps and other switches.
- Install grab bars in the tub and shower to help keep you safe, and use a no-slip mat.
Staying Safe in Your Community
- Make good use of handrails on sidewalks and escalators.
- Opt for low-heeled rubber-soled shoes for the best traction and support while out walking.
- Stick to the grass if it’s been raining or snowing, if you can.
- Use a cane or walking aid if and when you need it.
