instructor - Ana Walch, OTR/L, CHT

Ana Walch, OTR/L, CHT, is the Clinic Manager for Sovereign Rehabilitation's (SR) Hand to Shoulder Group (HSG) at the West Paces and Coca Cola Company locations. Ana is a licensed occupational therapist and a certified hand therapist (CHT). She has been a CHT since 1991.

Ana is experienced in treating a wide range of hand and upper extremity conditions such as orthopedic injuries, burns, pain syndromes, arthritis, cumulative trauma disorders and traumatic injuries. She is skilled in fabricating complex splints and is trained to perform functional capacity evaluations (FCEs).

Prior to joining SR, Ana worked for one of the largest outpatient physical rehabilitation companies in Atlanta. Previous to that position, Ana worked for one of Atlanta's most talented hand and microsurgery physician groups. In addition, she has taught splinting courses in the United States, Spain, Italy and Puerto Rico for well-known companies as Sammons-Preston.

Ana received a Bachelor of Science in health education from Texas A&M University in 1984 and later earned a bachelor's degree in occupational therapy from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1987. Ana is a member of the American Society of Hand Therapists, the Georgia Hand and Upper Extremity Special Interest Group, and the Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

This one day workshop is designed for occupational therapists, certified occupational therapy assistants, physical therapists, and physical therapy assistants with basic to advance level splinting skills. The workshop will provide a comprehensive, hands-on approach that will help to improve your splint making skills when working with patients with various hand and upper extremity conditions. Upon completion of this course, attendees will have enhanced their theoretical knowledge and problem solving skills in choosing the correct splint and splinting materials, when treating patients with a variety of upper quadrant conditions.

Along with lectures and demonstrations, a majority of the day will be spent fabricating a variety of splints. This course will improve your efficiency and confidence level with fabricating splints. Learn to quickly and easily master the mechanics of splint fabrication, with special techniques and helpful hints that let you create professional looking thermoplastic splints.

At the end of this seminar, the participant will:

• understand basic splinting principles and techniques for static and dynamic splinting
• demonstrate the ability to fabricate a variety of static splints including finger, hand, and forearm-based
• be able to choose the appropriate splint materials including strapping and padding
• understand biomechanical and anatomical principles of splinting
