Even before that first cold front of the season blows in, your body knows it’s coming — especially if you have chronic pain. Many chronic pain sufferers, or those living with an injury, often report aches and pains triggered by cooler temperatures.
And there’s some science to back up that claim. When the barometric pressure outside changes, like it does when it’s damp or cold, the nerve endings of our joints are receptive to that, triggering aches, pains and stiffness.
As the temperatures continue to drop, protect yourself against pain flare-ups with these tips:
- Eat well. Vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin K and omega-3 fatty acids can help curb inflammation, fight pain, and protect the cartilage in your joints. To work these into your diet, load up on salmon, nuts, dark leafy greens like spinach and kale, oranges, tomatoes and bell peppers. Calcium from broccoli and yogurt, along with a vitamin D supplement can also help keep bones and muscles strong, prevent further injury, and help halt pain.
- Keep moving. Light, low-impact exercises such as walking and yoga improve blood flow and circulation, and keep joints and muscles lubricated, helping to prevent pain, stiffness, and further injury. Before you begin exercising though, talk with your Sovereign Rehabilitation therapist about the best workouts for you and your condition. This will help ensure you’re working out safely and effectively.
- Indulge in a warm bath. Drawing a warm bath with Epsom salt can help soothe achy joints and calm aggravated muscles. A heating pad applied to troubled or painful areas can also provide relief, as can layering in warm comfy clothes and socks. (If you’re dealing with swelling, that actually responds better to cold, such as an ice pack).
