Some professionals have been known to take out insurance policies on their hands because those are the tools of their trade and vital to their livelihood. Doctors, surgeons, dentists, musicians and artisans depend on healthy hands to do their work. We all use our hands for living without thinking how vital they are. Only if a finger gets hurt or broken, do we then realize how crucial is our hand health.
Practical Jobs, Probable Injuries
As our world depends more and more on technology, most workers find themselves using computers. Day in and day out some people are working with keyboards for hours on end. This type of repetitive motion can cause problems.
Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is caused by improper technique using a keyboard and mouse. This injury can be very painful, and it can incapacitate a person. Untreated RSI can lead to damage in the hand and wrist and spread to nerves, muscles and tendons affecting the elbow, forearms, shoulders and neck. While carpal tunnel is bad enough, with damage done to the medial nerve in the wrist, RSI can do even more harm.
Musculo-skeletal Disorders (MSDs) are also common among those who are constantly using a keyboard. In addition to RSI and carpal tunnel, MSDs include cumulative trauma disorders, muscle sprains and strains, tendonitis and other problems. Muscle fatigue, spasms, numbness and pain are symptoms associated with these disorders.
Take Preventive Measures
Lower your risk for MSDs by taking a few precautionary measures to protect not only your digits, but also your wrists, arms, elbows, shoulders, neck and back. They are all connected.
- Take Frequent Breaks. You may need to set a timer to remind yourself to get up and stretch. Don’t limit it to body stretches; stretch your fingers and do a few finger exercises to reduce the strain that constant keyboarding puts them through.
- Practice proper keyboarding. It can be challenging to unlearn bad habits, but if you are looking at a career of working with your fingers, it is important to make sure you are doing your work correctly.
- Make an investment in ergonomic equipment. Whether you can afford a completely ergonomic office suite, or you need to get your ergonomic equipment one piece at a time, you’ll be glad you made the investment. You will be able to feel the difference and you will be healthier for it.
If you do experience pain or discomfort in your fingers, hands, wrists, arms, elbows, shoulders or neck, be sure to check in with your doctor or physical therapist. Continuing to work through discomfort and pain may be creating an irreversible problem that could leave you incapacitated.
