Now that World Cup is over it may be no longer time to be a spectator and time to get back to the field yourself. However, sometimes stepping back into a sport after being a spectator or a long break, can be hard. The inspiration the athletes provide can make you hungry for a taste of the competition. If you don’t plan your return to action carefully, it can cause unnecessary injury and pain.
If you’re returning to a sport that you haven’t played for awhile, here are some things to keep in mind to help you prevent injury and pain.
- Make sure you’re dressed properly for your activity. Ensure that you have proper shoes that will support your running, jumping or hopping. In addition, pack your sports duffle bag with the proper protective wear such as a mouth guard, chin guards or whatever other safety devices necessary for your particular sport.
- Let ‘slow and steady’ be your motto. Ease into your sport. Warm up before beginning and possibly play at a lower level than your did in the past and work your way back up.
- Make sure your diet and water intake can support your level of activity. Stay hydrated and fuel your body with healthy foods that will give you every benefit for your game.
