Two Common Ski Injuries To Try To Avoid
Are you planning a ski trip for the winter of 2019? Perhaps you go annually and you have your favorite spot you hit every winter. Or, you may be planning to make “learning to ski” on the top of your New Year’s Resolutions and hitting the slopes for the very first time this winter.
Whether it’s your first or fifteenth time to go skiing, there are several things Sovereign Rehabilitation would like to remind you of before you head out to your skiing destination.
- The most common ski injuries happen to your knees. More specifically, medial collateral ligament (MCL) tears are the most common. This knee injury happens when the tips of your skies are pointed toward one another in a “snowplow” position. This is a slowing or stopping position, but it can also cause you to fall down. To prevent this type of injury ensure that your weight is balanced when in “snowplow” position and do not attempt to ski in areas that are too challenging for your skill level.
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are also common among skiers. Your ACL helps stabilize your knee, and if it is injured, it will most likely require surgery. This type of injury often occurs during a landing or a fall. Learn to land safely if you plan on doing jumping and learn to accept a fall as well. Trying to avoid a fall can actually cause you to go against momentum and cause an injury.
