Your Joyful Child with Down Syndrome

Atlanta GA Physical Therapy for ChildrenWe challenge you to find a child with Down Syndrome who is not smiling. Down Syndrome children seem to wear a perpetual smile and know no stranger. Blowing kisses to everyone through the drive-thru window and hugging the people who bag your groceries are normal happenings in the lives of a family with a child suffering from Down Syndrome.

The truth of the matter is that Down Syndrome children are not always joyful. They have feelings like anyone else. They experience the full range of emotions. They respond to positive expressions of friendship, and are hurt and upset by inconsiderate behavior. People with Down Syndrome socialize and have meaningful friendships.

Down Syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition. Approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down Syndrome, or around 6,000 births per year. Most people with Down Syndrome have a mild to moderate cognitive disability, or intellectual disability. This is not indicative of the many strengths and talents that each individual possesses.

The potential that children have with Down Syndrome is encouraging. Always keep in mind that every person with Down Syndrome is a unique individual. Each child will develop at his or her own pace. It may take children with Down Syndrome longer that other children to reach developmental milestones, but many of these milestones will eventually be met through proper care and rehabilitation.
