At Sovereign Rehabilitation we provide one-on-one care for each of our patients who suffer from a wrist injury. Our trusted and experienced professionals offer injury treatment and therapy that will help you regain strength, health and range of motion. One focus of our therapeutic treatments is that of edema control.
According to The Mayo Clinic, “Edema is swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in your body’s tissues. Although edema can affect any part of your body, it’s most commonly noticed in the hands, arms, feet, ankles and legs.” The swelling can inhibit your range of motion and cause other adverse effects such as pain and noticeable swelling.
Sovereign Rehabilitation will work with you to help treat and control your edema during wrist therapy. One way you can help control your edema on a daily basis is by controlling your sodium (salt) intake. Sodium is one of the key factors that can affect your balance of fluids. If you have an excess of this essential mineral in your body, your tissues will hold onto water in order to help balance the fluid-sodium ratio. Too much salt can make you feel bloated due to fluid retention.
If you’re suffering from severe edema, reducing your sodium intake will assist your body in releasing some of your stored up fluid and reduce your swelling. According to The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics you should restrict your sodium intake to 2,000 milligrams or less per day if you suffer from edema.
