Noises in your jaw can be normal. A normal jaw sound is called “subluxation.” Subluxation is when your lower jawbone extends too far over the ridge on the opposite upper part of your joint. You may hyperextend your jaw and hear a loud “pop” sound when you yawn a mighty yawn! These sounds are normal, albeit, noisy!
However, there is a clicking noise that can come from your jaw that may be a sign of Temporomandibular Joint Pain (TMJ). If your TMJ has a dysfunction then you have something called TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder). This is a dysfunction of the TMJ and your muscles that help your jaw movement.
- Irregular movements
- Excessive chewing
If you have TMD, the noisy clicking coming from your jaw is typically painful and uncomfortable. You also may have difficulty opening your mouth, chewing or eating. If you have a combination of jaw pain and clicking noises, it is almost always a sign of a problem in your jaw, and you should get it checked out immediately. You will experience less discomfort and damage if you get the cause of your jaw pain diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible.
