Five Pain-Relieving Power Foods

SovereignLogoFigureWhether it’s minor body aches, chronic lower back pain, or the pain that comes from recovering from an injury or condition, studies have shown that food really can help you feel better.

When you incorporate nutrient-packed fruits, vegetables, and grains into your rehabilitation plan, you increase the likelihood of recovering more quickly and feeling better faster.

Try out these pain-relieving power players the next time you make a trip to the grocery store.

  • Salmon – Load up on salmon and other fatty fish like herring and sardines that are low in mercury and high in healthy omega-3s. Omega-3 fatty acids encourage blood flow and help reduce inflammation, which can help ease aches and pains. Fish oils like these also boost your mood, thanks to their positive affect on brain chemicals, and studies have shown that when you’re happy and positive, you’re less cognitively aware of pain.
  • Turmeric – This powerful spice is great for those suffering from painful or swollen joints. Turmeric is packed with curcumin, a substance that helps protect against tissue destruction in the body, and also promotes healthy cell function. Try sprinkling it on salad or veggies with black pepper, or consider taking a supplement. Note: Make sure you check with your doctor before beginning any type of supplement regiment.
  • Cherries – Tossing a few cherries (and strawberries and raspberries) in your cart means you’re loading up on pain and inflammation-fighting pigments called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins give cherries their deep red color, but they also imbue the little fruits with the power to help reduce inflammation and fight free radicals in the body. Studies have found that the anti-inflammatory properties in cherries may have the same affect as those in an aspirin.
  • Whole grains – Foods like whole wheat bread, quinoa, and bulgur are packed with the mineral magnesium. In some animal-based studies, magnesium has been shown to fight muscle pain. In people living with fibromyalgia, some studies have also shown that magnesium targets pain receptors, calming down trigger point pain.
  • Pineapple – It’s the perfect time of year to start loading up on this sweet, tropical fruit – and not only because it’s delicious in a smoothie. Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain that has been shown in some studies to have the pain relieving, anti-inflammatory affects similar to that of NSAIDS like aspirin. Bromelain may also help activatve immune cells that can help fight infection. Note: If you’re on any type of blood thinning medication, talk to your doctor before consuming bromelain-containing foods or supplements.
