Many women with breast cancer have some type of breast surgery. Any type of breast surgery can affect how well women are able to move their shoulders, arms, how easily they are able to take a deep breath, or simply complete daily tasks such as brushing their hair, bathing, and dressing. Pain and stiffness can cause weakness and limit movement of the upper body. It is very important for women to do exercises after breast surgery in order to get the arms and shoulders moving again. Exercises help to decrease any side effects from surgery and to prevent scar tissue from building up and restricting healing.
Post breast surgery therapy is available at Sovereign Rehabilitation from our licensed physical and occupational therapists. Our locations feature therapist with specialized training in the treatment and rehabilitation of women’s health issues. Breast surgeries and radiation can affect the arm and shoulder long after treatments are finished. Therefore, it is highly important to develop a regular exercise routine to maintain arm and shoulder mobility after radiation treatments and breast surgery. Sovereign Rehabilitation helps patients work through those first few sessions at a pace that feels comfortable but also challenges them to work at restoring movement.
The therapists at Sovereign Rehabilitation are specially trained to design an exercise program just for women who are recovering from breast surgery. For women who have not regained full use of their arm(s) within 3-4 weeks post surgery, post breast surgery therapy is needed to increase the ability to move the shoulder and arm and to make the arm stronger. Sovereign Rehabilitation is dedicated to helping women recover from breast surgery, and we offer individualized care for all of our patients.
