Do You or a Family Member Suffer from Scoliosis?

Our therapists trained in the Schroth Method can improve posture, relieve pain, and help avoid surgery

“Idiopathic scoliosis” is a curvature of the spine that occurs spontaneously in most patients and persists for a lifetime. As the condition progress, it may cause deformity, pinched nerves, herniated discs, muscle spasms, reduced mobility, and difficulty breathing.

We see more and more patients needing help with scoliosis—both adolescents and aging adults. Traditional forms of treatment (from braces to major surgery) often have limited results. That’s why our leadership team has researched—and found—a “better way” to provide long-term, non-invasive relief.

The Schroth Method has long been the preferred form of scoliosis treatment in Europe. Today, select practices in the United States (for example, the spine therapy center of New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery) have trained and certified Schroth Method therapists. Sovereign has made this commitment, becoming the leading treatment provider in greater Atlanta, which includes a much-needed focus on aging adult patients.

How Treatment Works

The five goals of the Schroth Method are to:

  • Correct posture
  • Reduce or stop curve progression
  • Prevent and treat respiratory dysfunction
  • Eliminate spinal pain syndromes
  • Improve body appearance and aesthetics

A program of stretching, strengthening, and breathing techniques counteracts the rotation of the spinal curvature and restores alignment of the pelvis. The patient learns how to breathe and align the body in daily activities, until he or she can maintain the program independently at home.

The Schroth Method certified therapist will customize the program based on the patient’s age and condition. Properly applied, this approach offers an effective alternative to surgery. For more advanced cases, it can help improve the outcome of traditional scoliosis treatments.

As importantly, the Schroth Method serves to empower patients. It gives them the means to manage scoliosis on their own, proactively, with ongoing advice and support from their therapists at Sovereign.
