Atlanta Physical TherapistsIliotibial Band Syndrome, more commonly referred to as IT Band Syndrome, is a common overuse injury that occurs among runners and those who are particularly active with high intensity movements. The Iliotibial band runs down the outside of the thigh from the hip to the shin, just below the knee joint. This band attaches to the knee and functions in coordination with several thigh muscles to help stabilize the joint for proper movement. Iliotibial band syndrome is caused by inflammation of the IT band. During flexion and extension of the knee, the IT band rubs over the thigh bone, leading to irritation. When the band is inflamed, it does not glide easily over the thigh bone and pain is felt during movement of the knee.
