Sovereign Rehabilitation offers a variety of treatments for children with Down Syndrome. Physical therapy for children with Down Syndrome can help build motor skills, increase muscle strength, improve posture and balance. Getting your child the physical therapy they need early on is extremely important because it can help them develop a foundation to achieve other skills as they grow. Sovereign Rehabilitation understands that every child with Down Syndrome has different individual intellectual and developmental skills. This means we will work hard to help find treatment options that are specific to your child’s needs. What is Down Syndrome?
Down Syndrome is a series of physical and mental disabilities. These symptoms can range from mild to moderate. For some, their physical health may be average, while others may require treatment. Children with Down Syndrome have diverse facial features and appearances. Not all children with Down Syndrome will look the same or progress at the same rate.
Some of the most common features in children with Down Syndrome are:
- Flattened facial features
- Undersized head
- Undersized neck
- Protruding tongue
- Upward slanting eyes
- Unusually shaped ears or small ears
- Poor muscle tone
- Broad, short hands with a single crease in the palm
- Short fingers, smaller hands and feet
- Excessive flexibility
- Tiny white spots on the iris of the eye called Brushfield spots
- Short height
Infants who have been diagnosed with Down Syndrome may appear to similar in size to other infants their age, but typically their growth will be slower and their height shorter than their peers.
